“GAZA, by Bashar Taleb”
Photos from Gaza and in the War Museum
The War Museum in Overloon is hosting an exhibition about life in Gaza. The exhibition features 24 photographs taken since October 2023 by 35-year-old Palestinian photographer Bashar Taleb.
The Middle East has been in turmoil for decades. In several countries, different population groups are in conflict with each other. On October 7, 2023, Israel was attacked by Hamas terrorists. Nearly 1,100 Israelis were killed, many were injured, and more than 240 people—ranging from young to old—were abducted. Shortly afterward, the Israeli government declared its intention to completely eliminate the terrorist organization Hamas and to take all necessary military measures to free the hostages. This led to large-scale military operations in the Gaza Strip, which are still ongoing. The more than two million Palestinians living there have come under heavy fire as a result. This exhibition aims to illustrate how war and military violence affect the lives of ordinary civilians.
Palestinian photographer Bashar Taleb was born in Gaza. He studied journalism and public relations at Al-Azhar University. From the Gaza Strip, he works for various international media outlets and news agencies. He is still in Gaza, although he was forced to flee his home in northern Gaza. He has witnessed the Israeli military operations against Hamas from the very beginning. His photographs documenting the impact of these operations on Gaza’s civilian population have been published worldwide.
Outside the exhibition space, additional images related to the terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023, are displayed. These include:
- A one-minute news report from Al Jazeera providing a factual account of the October 7 attacks, including an interview with a mother whose daughter was abducted by Hamas on that day.
- Four photographs from the official press agency of the Israeli government, showing victims of the attacks.
- Four photographs taken by a photographer from the left-wing Israeli newspaper Haaretz. This photographer was present in the attacked area on October 7 and documented the unfolding events.
The exhibition "GAZA, by Bashar Taleb" will be on display from November 12 until May 11, 2025.
