In September 1944, British General Montgomery devised the attack plan Market Garden. By launching airborne landings near Arnhem and securing a narrow corridor through southern Netherlands, the Allies aimed to push further towards Berlin. However, the plan was only partially successful.

The Allied forces attempted to widen and reinforce their corridor, but German troops countered by trying to cut them off. On September 30, heavy fighting broke out near Overloon. German Panther tanks and American Sherman tanks relentlessly engaged each other. About a week later, British troops also entered the battle. In the end, it took nearly three weeks before Overloon and the southern town of Venray were liberated.

The Battle of Overloon is known as the fiercest tank battle ever fought on Dutch soil.
